It is not quite the year of the underdog, then. Not yet. Not right now. Wait for it, wait for it. There’s still time. Manchester United are still in the FA Cup, still flying the flag for the traditional bastions of privilege, but they’ve got their work cut out after this.
United will return to Upton Park for one last FA Cup waltz beneath the floodlights next month. If they win, they will join Everton, Crystal Palace and Watford in the last four. If not, well it truly may be time to watch the skies. There’s some strange stuff going down this season.
And plenty of it in this match, too. Manchester United equalised in the 83rd minute, meaning they finally got a shot on target – one of two in the game – while the usually infallible David De Gea was beaten by a quite magnificent free-kick from 30 yards.
