Manchester United 1-1 West Ham: Anthony Martial cancels out Dimitri Payet stunner late on to send quarter final to a replay

  • West Ham thought they were on their way to Wembley thanks to Dimitri Payet's stunning second-half free kick
  • The in-form Frenchman stepped up and curled a delightful effort past Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea
  • The French midfielder curls a sublime effort past the outstretched De Gea to send the 9,000 travelling West Ham fans into party mode
  • However, fellow Frenchman Anthony Martial had other ideas as he netted a late equaliser to force a cup replay
  • West Ham had two early chances to take the lead but January loan signing Emmanuel Emenike fluffed his lines
  • Youngster Marcus Rashford caused problems throughout with his pace but United were unable to make it count
  • It is not quite the year of the underdog, then. Not yet. Not right now. Wait for it, wait for it. There’s still time. Manchester United are still in the FA Cup, still flying the flag for the traditional bastions of privilege, but they’ve got their work cut out after this.
United will return to Upton Park for one last FA Cup waltz beneath the floodlights next month. If they win, they will join Everton, Crystal Palace and Watford in the last four. If not, well it truly may be time to watch the skies. There’s some strange stuff going down this season.
And plenty of it in this match, too. Manchester United equalised in the 83rd minute, meaning they finally got a shot on target – one of two in the game – while the usually infallible David De Gea was beaten by a quite magnificent free-kick from 30 yards.
