Milan sent Inter spiralling into a crisis with a thumping 3-0 Derby della Madonnina win, but Mauro Icardi missed a penalty.
The Rossoneri were lower down the standings, but on better recent form than their cousins, as Inter had dropped from first to fourth place in under a month and were hammered 3-0 midweek by Juventus in the Coppa Italia. Mauro Icardi was surprisingly dropped and Jonathan Biabiany ill with flu, but new buy Eder was thrown straight into the starting XI just two days after his transfer from Sampdoria. Milan missed Luiz Adriano and Philippe Mexes, while Mario Balotelli and Kevin-Prince Boateng were not fit enough to start.
The Rossoneri hadn’t won the Derby della Madonnina since a 1-0 result in May 2014, followed by two draws and a defeat.
Eder almost marked his debut with a goal in the opening minutes, but mistimed his diving header on a Juan Jesus cross from six yards. Gianluigi Donnarumma is the youngest ever goalkeeper in the Milan Derby and the 16-year-old got down well to beat away a Marcelo Brozovic snapshot.
Samir Handanovic decisively flapped a Juraj Kucka pull-back off the feet of Carlos Bacca, while Stevan Jovetic just passed a volley straight to Donnarumma at the back stick.
Milan broke the deadlock with an unexpected scorer, as from a corner Keisuke Honda curled in a marvellous cross for Alex’s towering header. It was the first time Inter had conceded a header this season and Roberto Mancini was absolutely furious.
Curiously, the pre-match choreography in the Milan end depicted Mark Hateley’s towering header over Fulvio Collovati in the 1984 derby and this was a not dissimilar image.
Donnarumma almost gave away a goal when rushing off his line to clear from Ivan Perisic, but Ignazio Abate got back to stop Jovetic nodding into an empty net.
The second half saw a controversial incident, as Donnarumma completely mis-kicked his clearance and Eder pounced, so the pair collided. The referee seemed to walk towards the penalty spot, but then changed his mind on advice from the assistants. Replays suggest Donnarumma got there first and punched it on to Eder, so at most it would’ve been an indirect free kick for handling a back-pass, but Mancini was sent off for dissent. On the way out he clearly said to the Fourth Official: “You should be ashamed of yourself. Ashamed.”
Milan threatened from another set play, but this time Jack Bonaventura’s shot was charged down. Inter introduced Mauro Icardi and he proved decisive, forcing a great save out of Donnarumma at the near post and unable to get the rebound because he was felled by Alex. Maurito went to take the penalty himself, but smacked the spot-kick against the upright.
Moments later the Nerazzurri were even more distraught at that incident, because Milan doubled their lead. Niang whipped in a splendid cross from the right and Bacca snuck up behind Joao Miranda to slide in, volleying with the inside of his knee.
Perisic wasted a promising Eder move and again Milan punished them with another goal. Bonaventura rolled across for Niang, whose first effort was straight at Handanovic’s legs, but at the second time of asking fired into the roof of the net.
Handanovic prevented the fourth with a fine reaction save on Bacca and Kucka drilled wide, as Inter’s heads visibly dropped.
