- No team has scored more than Real Madrid's 23 goals in the eight Champions League games so far this season
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 40th goal of the season to send Real Madrid into the Champions League quarter-finals.
It was his 13th of the tournament so far, the sixth consecutive season he has broken the 40-goal barrier, and it killed off Roma who had squandered the chances to make a contest of it.
Poor finishing from former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko and former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah were the main culprits although Keylor Navas had been up to the task when Roma had managed to hit the target saving well from Alessandro Florenzi and Kostas Manolas in the second half.
Gareth Bale was impressive on his first start for Real Madrid in 51 days but it was his substitution on the hour that sparked the win.
His replacement Lucas Vazquez ran on to Luka Modric’s pass and crossed from the right for Ronaldo who got in front of the last covering defender to poke the ball past Wojciech Szczesny.
The Arsenal loanee was beaten again with Real Madrid’s next attack. This time it was James Rodriguez converting Ronaldo’s pass.
No one will want Real Madrid in the quarter-final draw although they labored through the first half with Ronaldo’s seven shots on goal coming to nothing. He more than made up for it in the second half to put Zinedine Zidane’s team in the last eight.
Real Madrid’s first chance came on seven minutes when Marcelo sent Bale down the left and then got on the end of his cross into the box, only to drag the effort wide.
