FINALLY MANCHESTER UNITED SECURES GLORY

Jesse Lingard

Crystal Palace 1 - Man Utd 2 (AET): Super sub Lingard secures FA Cup glory for Red Devils

A SEASON of football wonder delivered one more crazy, captivating day as 10-man Manchester United claimed FA Cup Final glory thanks to a stupendous extra-time goal by Jesse Lingard.

This is the young English talent who barely gets a mention in the headlines, but his majestic winner delivered a first trophy for United in three years.
Whether that is enough to save the job of veteran manager Louis van Gaal, we will discover in the coming days.

But the sheer delight on the face of the Dutchman revealed everything about how much this triumph meant to him and his much-maligned team.
For Palace it meant despair at the end of a Cup final in which they gave their heart and soul to capture the club’s first ever piece of major silverware. They were so near, and yet so far.
Extra time was pulsating as United’s commanding goalkeeper David De Gea made saves to keep out shots from Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle, while skipper Mile Jedinak shot inches wide.
England defender Chris Smalling became only the fourth player to be sent off in an FA Cup final, shown a second yellow card for a needless rugby tackle on Bolasie inside the Palace half.
United had to play the second half of extra time down to 10 men, yet they captured the lead through Lingard and then survived to lift the Cup.
