Van Gaal believes winning the FA Cup and finishing in top four will save his job at Manchester United but Mourinho camp expect him to take over in summer

Louis van Gaal still believes he can save his job as Manchester United manager by winning the FA Cup and finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season.
The prospect of the Dutchman seeing out the final year of his contract at Old Trafford appears to be slim in the wake of another disappointing campaign and widespread criticism of his tactics.
Jose Mourinho’s camp believe that the Portuguese coach will be installed as Van Gaal’s successor this summer, with reports suggesting that a deal will be tied up before then following further talks with United this week.
Those players in the United squad opposed to Mourinho taking over hope that Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward will turn to Ryan Giggs, who was put in temporary charge for the final four matches of the season when David Moyes was sacked two years.
Woodward wielded the axe on Moyes when it became mathematically impossible for United to qualify for the Champions League, and that remains the only firm yardstick to gauge Van Gaal’s situation.

The 64-year-old hopes that winning the FA Cup as well, by beating Crystal Palace at Wembley next month, would give Woodward enough reason to keep him on for another year.
Woodward has been desperate for Van Gaal to succeed at United to vindicate his decision to turn to the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax coach in the wake of Moyes’s ill-fated reign.
But the clamour for change has been hard to ignore after seeing United lurch unpredictably through another season of lack-lustre performances and poor results.
The majority of the players like Van Gaal as a person but have reservations about him as a coach. Frustration over the Dutchman’s repetitive training techniques are well documented, and they have been left baffled by some of his decisions.
