Barcelona OUT of the Champions League: Atletico produce vintage display as holders are controversially denied last-gasp penalty

ATLETICO MADRID 2-0 BARCELONA (agg 3-2) -AT VICENTE CALDERON: Having been favourites to become the first side to defend the Champions League, Barcelona were sent crashing out at the quarter-final stage by La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid. Antoine Griezmann's first-half header and a penalty three minutes from time settled a pulsating tie that saw Diego Simeone's side progress to the last four with a 3-2 aggregate win.

After losing 2-1 away to Barcelona in the first leg, it's Atletico Madrid going to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League, having beaten their Spanish rivals 2-0 (3-2 on aggregate) at the Vicente Calderon.
Antoine Griezmann was the hero on the night, scoring with a header off Saul Niguez' cross in the first half, and then capping it off with a penalty in the 88th minute, after Andres Iniesta decided to play goalkeeper and dive at the ball in the box.
Atleti started strong, stifling Barca and closing them down, also managing to keep Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez quiet. The visitors had more chances in the second period, but the Madrid side's counter attack proved enough.
Barcelona should have been awarded a late penalty when a ball hit Gabi's hand in the Atletico box, however, the referee gave a free kick instead, claiming that the offence had been committed outside the area.
