Democratic Republic of Congo were crowned winners of this year’s African Nations Championships after a one-sided 3-0 victory over Mali in Sunday’s Final.
In pouring conditions at the Amahoro in a match officiated by South Africa’s Daniel Bennett, Elia Meschak gave DR Congo the lead just before the half-hour mark with a superb finish to send the partisan crowd into raptures as they celebrated the Final’s first goal.
DR Congo held a 1-0 lead at half-time, before that man Meschak struck again, dribbling past the Mali goalkeeper to double his personal tally and his side’s lead.
The result was put beyond doubt on 72 minutes as Jonathan Bolingi registered his name on the scoresheet to secure the resounding victory and the gold medal for the Leopards.
